Transportable multifunction energy storage system using first and second-life batteries for supporting outages and seasonal demand peaks in the distribution network

This study explores the development, deployment, and operation of an innovative mobile energy storage system integrating first-life (150 kW/300 kWh) and second-life (150 kW/100 kWh) batteries within distribution grids. This system is designed to address critical challenges, including planned power outages, seasonal peak demand, and voltage/reactive power regulation. The study presents a detailed characterization of the second-life batteries system and key components of the energy storage system, providing insight into its functionality. Simulations carried out using a manufacturer-developed model demonstrate the system's dynamic performance under grid-connected (on-grid) and standalone (off-grid) conditions. This work holds significant relevance in the distribution systems, where the application of transportable first-life battery energy storage systems remains underexplored and second-life batteries are yet to be utilized in transportable systems for distribution grids. By addressing this gap, the study highlights the potential benefits and feasibility of such systems, aiming to contribute valuable insights to transition towards sustainable and resilient energy solutions.
