Data driven condition management in urban distribution system operator
This paper deals with the development of data-based condition management of distribution networks and substation process equipment of Helen Electricity Network Ltd. (Helen DSO) in Helsinki, Finland. In addition, the use and profitability of separate condition management devices used by Helen DSO is valuated. The amount of information in the modern electricity network has increased significantly. Its efficient management brings benefits to maintenance and asset management operations. Equipment breakdowns can be predicted, maintenance costs can be reduced, and replacement investments can be allocated to the equipment at the optimal time. Major challenges in data processing are its complexity and location in different systems. Helen DSO uses manifold maintenance management systems for various parts of the network. Their operation can be enhanced by combining information from different systems and by implementing completely new features. The use of separate condition monitoring equipment can be made more efficient by directing them even more towards statistically failing components and changing their procurement methods to only apply the end of the monitored component's life cycle. No new needs for condition monitoring equipment were found because their economic profitability is generally weak in the dense and operationally reliable ity network of the Helen DSO.
