Roadmap for unleashing large-scale energy transition potential by fully viable and integrated Energy Communities
The electricity sector is undergoing rapid technological change, but regulatory frameworks and market rules often fail to keep pace, creating a gap between innovation and implementation. This gap highlights the need for modernized power grid architectures integrating distributed energy resources and energy communities. The latter, consisting of groups of consumers, producers, and storage, have the potential to improve energy efficiency and sustainability and to propel the energy transition. However, achieving this requires supportive legislation, effective organizational structures, inclusive market mechanisms accommodating participants of all sizes, and technical modernization. Integrating energy communities into the power grid provokes many challenges, such as security of supply, power quality, etc. Overcoming these challenges requires innovative solutions and increased societal awareness that these communities can play their part in the energy transition. Moreover, energy communities must function equitably within the electricity market, balancing opportunities with responsibilities, including technical contributions and operational reliability. Only when these challenges have been overcome can the energy communities contribute to a sustainable, democratic energy future and drive forward the energy transition while ensuring fairness and reliability for all stakeholders.
