Automated grid expansion and decommissioning planning of low-voltage and low-pressure grids for sector-coupled scenarios in an existing German district

This paper presents a method for automatically analysing sector-coupled scenarios in existing districts, focusing on their grid impact on low-voltage and low-pressure grids, as well as their transformation. It highlights the sensitivity of building refurbishment and potential gas grid decommissioning. The developed profitability indicator, tested on sub gas grids, shows significant improvement through targeted decommissioning measures. Depending on the scenario and grid structure, the need for expansion at the low-voltage level can vary greatly. Results from the automated planning emphasise that classifying and analysing districts and grid structures using lead scenarios within the developed framework is essential to ensure transferability. These findings provide generally valid recommendations for strategic district planning and policy-making.
