Cost and technical optimized use of cables at volatile energy transfer
The paper presents an analytical thermal model for single-core medium-voltage cables, incorporating critical factors such as ground thermal resistance, thermal interactions with adjacent cables, and conductor resistance variations under transient loa ds. This model is designed to optimize conductor sizing, reduce costs, and improve efficiency. The analytical solution provides a robust and practical framework for understanding cable thermal behavior under various loading conditions, offering systematic solutions to complex thermal equations and enabling dynamic performance analysis. The study focuses on medium-voltage cables in the context of fluctuating photovoltaic (PV) energy generation, analyzing three phase system in a flat configuration. Results reveal significant temperature variations caused by transient loads from renewable energy variability, affecting cabl e performance, lifespan, and reliability. Furthermore, the research investigates the calculation and impact of the cycle factor, as introduced in IEC 60853-1, on current-carrying capacity across a 22 km double system of medium-voltage cables in a triangular configuration connecting a PV park to its feed-in point.
