Advantages of using high DC voltage in large scale battery energy storage systems operated in various market driven scenarios

Stationary Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are gaining increasing importance in both decentralized energy systems and power supply networks. Currently, most BESS are integrated into photovoltaic (PV) systems for household applications, where they primarily serve to optimize self-consumption and enhance self-sufficiency. However, the rise of variable electricity prices has opened new opportunities for more flexible BESS utilization. This flexibility results in higher cycling rates and a significant increase in power demand, which poses new challenges for system efficiency. This paper highlights the advantages of operating BESS at higher voltages to mitigate energy losses compared to the state-of-the-art approaches commonly used in residential applications. By addressing these technical improvements, the study provides valuable insights into the design and operation of future-proof BESS that meet the demands of dynamic energy markets while maintaining efficiency.
