Empowering microgrids with adaptive household energy management

The global shift to renewable energy and the increase in electrification presents challenges for traditional power grids, especially in maintaining resilience amid climate change and geopolitical uncertainties. As centralized systems transition into decentralized grids with distributed resources, balancing supply and demand becomes crucial. Microgrids, integrating localized energy generation, storage, and consumption, offer a promising solution to enhance grid resilience during disruptions. This paper emphasizes the importance of household flexibility in supporting microgrids to ensure stability and maintain electricity supply under high demand or adverse conditions. Flexible energy resources like batteries, heating systems, and other household loads enable households to contribute to a microgrid’s ability to operate in island mode or enhance resilience. By leveraging advanced digital communication technologies, real-time data from these resources can be incorporated into microgrid systems, enabling dynamic demand-side adjustments and efficient resource allocation. This ensures optimal energy management and strengthens the microgrid’s capacity to respond to changing conditions. The study explores technical and socio-economic dimensions, analyzing household readiness to adjust energy usage for grid balancing. By addressing these factors, it offers insights into optimizing microgrid operations and fostering collaboration between households and energy stakeholders, building adaptive and sustainable energy systems with improved resilience.
