Innovative approach to boosting DER hosting through a combination of distribution transformers, line voltage regulation and OT/IT integration
This paper presents an innovative approach to improve the Distributed Energy Resources (DER) hosting capacity of a medium voltage grid by introducing a compact line voltage regulation transformer (C-LVR). The proposed concept combines the functions of a Voltage-Regulating Distribution Transformer (VRDT) and a Medium Voltage Line Voltage Regulator (MV-LVR) into a single distribution transformer tank. This integration enables economic voltage regulation and increased grid hosting capacity in distribution grids. The solution includes a Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) for secure communication with a control centre using IEC60870-5-104 and MQTT Sparkplug [1] for condition monitoring, reducing maintenance costs. Local control functions, such as a bypass switch, ensure reliable and secure operation. The paper also provides a technical and economic comparison of three established voltage regulation methods and introduces the new concept's benefits. A cost-benefit analysis demonstrates that the new C-LVR concept significantly reduces both capital and operational expenses. Overall, the new concept enhances economic viability and network hosting capacity, presenting a substantial improvement over existing strategies.
