Long-term distribution grid planning framework leveraging flexibility and DSO digitalisation
The increasing integration of decentralized renewable energy sources (RES) and the electrification of transport and heating are placing immense strain on distribution grids. DSOs are exploring new methods to address these challenges, balancing traditional grid reinforcement with the use of flexibility services from both demand and generation. The proposed framework combines historical metering data, demand and generation forecasts, and flexibility availability of demand and generation to optimize long-term grid planning. Flexibility services serve as a complement to grid reinforcement measures and should be systematically considered in the long-term planning of distribution networks.
