Proposal of platform for AC/DC hybrid distribution network operation
With the proactive adoption of renewable energy sources, such as solar power, wind turbines, and energy storage systems (ESS), DC-based loads are steadily increasing within traditionally AC-centric distribution networks. This trend adds complexity to power conversion, potentially lowering operational efficiency and raising concerns about system stability. In this paper, we propose an integrated software–hardware platform for hybrid distribution networks that accommodate both AC and DC loads. By employing hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) to centrally manage storage, computing, and network resources, and by adopting the IEC61850 standard information model, we simplify the interconnection of diverse system components, including DER, AC/DC converters, and protection/control devices. We also utilize container orchestration techniques to ensure scalability and flexibility. This approach allows the platform to adapt seamlessly to various future scenarios, such as electric vehicle charging, microgrids, and local energy communities. The proposed platform is expected to enhance operational efficiency by supporting cost-effective planning and operation while ensuring stable system performance and flexible resource allocation in future distribution networks.
