Strategic integration of high-pass filters and detuned reactors for effective harmonic mitigation and resonance shifting: a case study
In modern power systems, the introduction of nonlinear loads has caused significant challenges at maintaining the quality of the power systems, with harmonic distortion emerging as a critical concern. This comprehensive study investigates a strategic solution that combines detuned reactors with high-pass filters to address these distortion issues. While shunt capacitors are commonly employed for power factor correction in presence of inductive loads in industrial systems environments, which they can inadvertently exacerbate harmonic distortion through resonance amplification. Through detailed simulation and analysis, the system performance evaluated using Total Harmonic Distortion of Voltage (THDv) and Total Demand Distortion (TDD) metrics across three distinct configurations: baseline without mitigation, intermediate with detuned reactors, and proposed integrated approach combining detuned reactors with high-pass filters. The findings demonstrate remarkable improvements, achieving THDv reduction of up to 78% and TDD reduction of 93%, while successfully maintaining compliance with IEEE 519-2014 standard. The novelty of this approach lies in its synergy, offering a holistic solution compared to standalone alternatives.
