Next generation active distribution grid operation using local flexibility markets

Efficient electricity grid use is crucial for addressing electrification challenges but is often hindered by long construction lead times and high costs. Transitioning to an active grid operation strategy with real-time measures can increase grid hosting capacity, either as an alternative to grid investments or while awaiting construction. This shift requires new workflows for distribution system operators, innovative decision support tools for grid operators, and local flexibility market platforms. This paper describes how these aspects are considered in theNextGridconcept of active grid operation. The paper finds that active grid operation requires development of operational policies, automated decision support tools for flexibility procurement, and well-designed local flexibility market products. Flexibility activation should be combined with other measures like dynamic line rating and grid topology reconfiguration. Finally, the paper discusses how this transition can be done gradually to lower risk in the implementation phase which is essential for DSOs when adapting new operational strategies in real grid operation.
