Optimizing cable size for cyclic loading using dynamic cable rating
The integration of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind requires efficient underground power cable sizing. Conventionally, cable sizing methods based on continuous current ratings often result in oversized cables. Dynamic cable rating (DCR) addresses the underutilization of buried power cables in variable loading conditions. This study explored two key prospectives: How much further can cable sized be optimized in cyclic loading applications compared to continuous loading with the same peak currents? (2) What methods best determine suitable cable sizes for systems with cyclic loads? Unlike traditional static rating methods, DCR incorporates real time environmental conditions and actual load profiles. The Finite Difference Method (FDM) was employed for cyclic rating calculations. Results showed slightly higher ratings than IEC standards 1.31 vs. 1.23 (cyclic factor). This emphasizes the limitations of analytical approaches. The research explores the relationship between load patterns and cable thermal characteristics, showing DCR as an effective approach to improve the cable size while meeting growing energy demands sustainably and efficiently.
