How to build an efficient virtual training?

In recent years, ABB Electrification Service has experimented with innovative methods for training electrification equipment operators. Remote training sessions have been used to share knowledge and provide deeper insights into device structure, operation, installation, and maintenance. However, none of the methods tried so far have efficiently addressed the three key aspects that make training experiences outstanding: 1. Illustrative demonstration 2. Hands-on performance 3. Trainer-trainee interaction. It is well proven in the literature [1] that knowledge acquisition and retention are significantly lower when these aspects are suppressed or omitted in the practical skills training. Until recently, these excellence aspects were only achievable through face-to-face training or expensive, tailor-made Virtual Reality (VR) experiences. With the latest developments in VR hardware and software, ABB Electrification Service has finalized a new Proof of Concept (PoC) for operator training in a virtual training room. The roadblocks of the past, such as expensive hardware, time-consuming 3D model simplification and animation processes, and costly licenses for shared VR experiences, have been removed with the latest technological advancements. Our paper describes the hardware and software systems used to build such an effective VR training environment. The cost levels achieved during the Proof of Concept were an order of magnitude lower compared to the VR training of the past, while the VR stage opens up more than just training use cases.
