E-REDES implement advanced analytics applied to satellite imagery to optimise vegetation management

E-REDES, the main Distribution System Operator in Portugal, is committed to environmental and social values, ensuring the safety of the electrical grid and compliance with legal obligations. Effective asset and vegetation management is crucial to achieving these goals. Currently, vegetation data near power lines faces limitations, such as low update frequency and sparse spatial details, hindering optimised management. To address this, E-REDES launched the “Earth Observation for Vegetation Management” project, utilizing low, medium and high resolution satellite imagery and advanced analytical models to improve vegetation monitoring and decision-making. A pilot project in a 277.7 km² area validated the approach, and in 2024, the project scale d nationally, covering approximately 15,000 km/year of power lines.
