EDP Inovação - speeding up overhead grids construction

The SUAG (Speed Up Aerial Grids) project, aims to accelerate aerial grid construction to meet the demands of the energy transition. This paper outlines the current challenges faced by Distribution System Operators (DSOs) and Transmission System Operators (TSOs) in Portugal, Spain, and Brazil, including labour shortages, safety risks, and consolidated construction methods that need to be rethought to speed up grid construction. EDP Innovation has identified innovative solutions such as composite poles, modular foundations, and drones for cable lifting and stringing to address these issues. The methodology used for this project involves mapping the existing construction process, conducting pre-pilot field tests, and performing laboratory tests to validate the technical and economic viability of these new technologies. Initial results from pre-pilot tests show significant improvements in efficiency, safety, and labour requirements. The project aims to validate these technologies and take all the needed steps to adopt them in daily usage, while decrease construction times, reduce labour needs and minimize work at heights, ultimately supporting EDP's commitment to the energy transition and positioning the company as a leader in sustainable grid construction.
