Silicon Anodes for Lithium-Ion Batteries: Advancements and Pathways to Industrialization

Silicon-based anodes offer significant potential for advancing lithium-ion battery technology due to their high theoretical capacity and abundant resources. However, challenges such as volume expansion and poor conductivity have hindered their commercial scalability. This review focuses on the future industrialization of silicon anodes, with an emphasis on solid-state battery (SSB) integration. Strategies for improving performance, such as structure regulation, and pre-lithiation techniques, are discussed in the context of enhancing the practical application of silicon anodes. The potential of solid-state systems to improve safety, energy density, and cycle life while simplifying battery design is explored. This review provides a forward-looking perspective on the commercialization of silicon anodes, highlighting their role in the next generation of high-performance, safe, and scalable energy storage solutions.
