Integrated Optics in Access Networks Roundtable : Abstract
The field of integrated optics (IO) deals with the process of combining multiple optical functions on a single chip. These functions can range from simple passive waveguides to the inclusion of active photonic components such as lasers, detectors, and modulators. The use of IO components is highly important for creating compact and cost-effective optical access networks. The purpose of optical access networks is to provide high bandwidth and mobility for realizing future advanced applications such as quadruple-play services that combine wireless, voice, video, and data services.
