African Innovation, Global Impact: Sub-Saharan Africa’s Digital Service MNCs
This paper explores the emergence of Digital Service Multinational Corporations (DSMNCs) from Sub-Saharan Africa, a new breed of “digital natives” challenging traditional international business and international entrepreneurship models. Drawing upon internationalization theories such as internalization theory and firm-specific advantages (FSAs), we examine how these African DSMNCs that leverage digital technologies and networks for rapid global expansion, are defying expectations. We explore their unique competitive advantages, contrasting them with traditional MNCs and established business models. By examining these firms’ unique characteristics and strategies, this paper contributes to a deeper understanding of the evolving dynamics of international business in the digital age. Furthermore, it highlights the implications of these developments for multinationals, the role of government policy in fostering a supportive ecosystem, collaborative endeavors, and the potential for these firms to drive intra-African trade and economic growth.
