Effective Strategies for Vacuum Furnace Companies Facing Low-Cost Competition in Global Markets
Abstract This presentation examines the current global market conditions and the pricing differences between traditional and low-cost country vacuum furnaces. The author explores potential growth opportunities and innovative strategies to reduce manufacturing costs, with the goal of maintaining competitiveness in the global marketplace. European and American vacuum furnace companies should enhance their offerings by adopting innovative manufacturing procedures and new furnace designs to reduce costs and improve the value of vacuum furnaces for heat treaters. In the face of ongoing global economic uncertainty, American heat treatment organizations must quickly adapt to effectively address the complex challenges posed by tariffs and trade disputes. The unprecedented tariff uncertainty requires action and adjustment that most of our companies, being too small, too local, and too parochial, are ill-equipped to handle with expertise and effectiveness. To stay competitive, we must manufacture furnaces in line with global market expectations and should offer our furnaces at competitive price levels. The US GDP accounts for approximately 17% of the worldwide GDP, measured in purchasing power parity (PPP) terms. We must be present in the remaining 83% of the worldwide market for two main reasons: to benefit from innovative designs, to participate in global research, and to increase our sales to finance future development. Low-pressure carburizing (LPC) using Acetylene, Gas Nitriding, Gas High-Pressure Quench furnaces, and Plasma Nitriding technologies have been developed in Europe but are commonly produced and used today in the US by companies. Exceptions to this include the fact that plasma nitriding is primarily sourced from European countries.
