Reducing CO2 Emissions and Carburizing Time by Increasing the Quench Speed of the Quench Oil
Abstract This study investigates the potential of high-speed quench oils to reduce carburizing cycle times in heat treating operations. Given that heating and carburization are major sources of CO2 emissions—due to fuels and gases like natural gas, methanol and acetylene. The research focuses on optimizing process efficiency. By increasing the quench cooling rate, the hypothesis is that required case depth and hardness can be achieved in less time, thus reducing furnace run-time and associated emissions. The presentation evaluates whether this approach maintains metallurgical performance while delivering measurable environmental and productivity gains.
