The transition from DNO to DSO for an active system operation in Austria
The paradigm shift in energy supply is challenging grid operators across Europe, fundamentally altering traditional operation and control structures. The massive increase in decentralized generation units, combined with the electrification of sectors such as mobility, space heating, and industry, is not only increasing demand but also changing the load flow behaviour in distribution grids. In Austria, electricity demand is expected to double by 2040, requiring the installed power plant capacity to nearly triple. This requires a significant expansion of grid capacities combined with an integration of new hard- and software technologies. For this purpose, new central operational strategies and applications will be required. Therefore, the shift from Distribution Network Operators to Distribution System Operators is essential, focusing on digitalization on all voltage levels, customer involvement, and data exchange.
