Enhancement of grid capacity with photovoltaic peak curtailment and battery usage: a case study in Bosnia and Herzegovina
This paper examines the integration of battery energy storage systems (BESS) with photovoltaic power plants (PVPPs) in Bosnia and Herzegovina to address challenges related to renewable energy intermittency and curtailed electric energy (CEE). Hosting capacity (HC) was calculated for urban, suburban, and rural feeders using DIgSILENT PowerFactroy (DPF) software. Results show varying HC capacities, with the urban feeder having a total of 4.60 MW, the suburban feeder 3.09 MW, and the rural feeder 2.04 MW. GAMS optimization simulations were applied to model the smart charging of BESS, where batteries are charged with curtailed energy. The simulation was performed for each feeder's three characteristic HC sites and for one month, July. The findings demonstrate that BESS integration can enhance renewable energy utilization, reduce CE E, and improve system performance, especially in urban and suburban areas.
