Hybrid-transformer for advanced management of distribution grids
The integration of distributed generation (DG) in modern electrical grids has introduced significant challenges in managing power quality (PQ), voltage regulation and system stability in distribution networks (DN). These networks, originally designed for unidirectional power flow from centralized generation to end customers, must now adapt bidirectional flows and intermittent energy sources. This shift needs advanced solutions to maintain grid reliability and resiliency. To address these challenges, ENEL (Ente Nazionale per l'Energia Elettrica) and Hitachi Energy (HE) are developing an innovative hybrid-transformer (HT), designed to enhance the operational flexibility and resilience of DN with high DG penetration. The core functionality of the HT includes precise voltage regulation, reactive power compensation, phase current balancing, active and reactive power control and harmonic filtering. This paper presents a high-level overview on the capabilities, control functionalities, and the benefits HT bring to a DN. Moreover, a test on a 250kVA demonstrator will be used to validate the effectiveness of the HT.
