Challenges and solutions of harmonic monitoring application as per IEEE 519 and IEC 61000-4-30 standards
Modern power grids are evolving with renewables, and these comprises of complex power electronic converters which injects huge amount of harmonics into the system. The harmonics injected by any source in the grid should be within the limits as specified in IEEE 519 standard to maintain power quality. Harmonic monitoring application helps to monitor the harmonic content in the form of Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), Individual Harmonic Distortion (IHD) and Total Demand Distortion (TDD) at Point of Common Coupling (PCC). When THD/IHD/TDD values exceed the specified limits, harmonic monitoring application provides alarm so that user can disconnect the harmonic source to maintain power quality in the system. Dedicated power quality device is needed to monitor the harmonic parameters in the grid, due to high computational requirements. With the optimizations in the calculation of harmonic parameters discussed in this paper, harmonic monitoring application can be offered in protection and control IED (Intelligent Electronic Device).
