Implementation of common information model in distribution system operations: a case study
This paper presents a case study of Northern Powergrid’s implementation of the Common Information Model (CIM) to enhance data standardisation and interoperability for electrical distribution network data sharing. CIM facilitates the exchange of network model data, including equipment, connectivity, operational, geographical, and situational data, in extensible markup language (XML) and resource description framework (RDF) formats. The case study outlines the methodology employed for CIM implementation for long-term development statement (LTDS), which involves evaluating current data management processes, mapping and integrating data, updating legacy systems, and interoperability testing to ensure seamless data exchange between various systems. This CIM implementation applies to entire Northern Powergrid’s EHV distribution network, across Northeast England and Yorkshire. Despite inconsistent data and modelling challenges, CIM solutions are achieved through database upgrades, improved data quality, addressing modelling issues and collaboration with software vendors. The implementation of CIM has significantly improved data interoperability, quality, and compliance, providing valuable insights for other distribution network operators (DNOs) pursuing similar initiatives.
