Evolution of distribution network strategy for overhead lines to reflect changing network risks
As impacts of climate change become more apparent in the UK, risks to the electricity network and its assets are increasing. This is affecting overhead lines (OHLs) in particular, which have historically always been more vulnerable to weather effects than other assets. As a GB DNO, SP Energy Networks (SPEN) are reviewing the OHL asset management strategy to improve resilience of OHL assets and ensure a continued reliable supply for customers. This strategy review includes assessing past projects and their benefits, trialling new technologies for use on the network and assessing if the existing strategy requires updating in light of available solutions and new risks emerging from weather and climate change. There are already a number of recommendations from this review, with more work required to ensure we make the most of OHL assets for our customers.
