Revenue metering based on LPITs complying with the IEC 61869-10 and IEC 61869-11 standards and its utilization in the medium-voltage applications
The evolution of smart grids and the broad application of renewables have created a need for the extensive use of current and voltage measurements for the proper management of power networks. These trends have contributed to the high deployment of primary measurement technologies based on low-power instrument transformers (LPITs or medium-voltage sensors) in medium-voltage (MV) networks. Historically, LPITs have been used for protection and control applications only. The development of materials and improvement of technologies allow us to achieve high accuracy performance with current sensors based on Rogowski coil principle (accuracy class 0, 2S) and voltage sensors based on voltage divider principles (accuracy class 0,2). This is an essential condition for revenue metering applications. Evolution in the international standardization has also well contributed to precise definition of all the requirements on LPIT performance in various applications. The IEC 61869 standards also specify the key parameters for compatibility with connected energy meters. Thus, LPITs complying with IEC 61869-10 and IEC 61869-11 standards ensure full performance in revenue metering applications. The paper is focused on a new solution suitable for revenue metering applications in MV systems and is dealing with development, testing, metrology certification and its implementation in MV applications.
