Optimal connection nodes conceptualization for battery energy storage systems
This paper presents a real site application of a model aimed at optimizing the connection node location for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) within a power grid, an essential aspect for enhancing grid efficiency and stability. The strategic placement of BESS nodes plays a pivotal role in maximizing the integration of renewable energy, ensuring grid stability, and optimizing economic returns for operators and asset owners. The proposed model emphasizes the selection of optimal locations by evaluating multiple factors such as grid topology, network conditions, and market opportunities. In the real site application, the model evaluates two scenarios within a medium voltage grid. The first scenario prioritizes renewable energy integration, resulting in an optimal BESS location that supports maximum grid services. The second scenario introduces a balanced approach, incorporating financial services into the analysis, which leads to a different optimal locati on. This demonstrates the model's flexibility in accommodating multiple asset operational goals. The proposed framework provides sustained robust results for optimizing BESS placement, ultimately enhancing the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of power grids while maximizing the return on investment for asset owners.
