Effect of physical exercise on mental well-being among adults in a district of Andhra Pradesh

ABSTRACT Background: Physical activity is widely recognized for its benefits on mental well-being. Regular exercise has been linked to reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance cognitive function. However, the specific impact of varying exercise intensities on mental health remains an area of ongoing research. Aim: The aim is to examine the relationship between physical activity levels and mental well-being among adults. It seeks to determine how different exercise intensities influence psychological health indicators such as stress, anxiety, and overall well-being. Methodology: A total of 389 participants were recruited for the study, representing diverse age groups and backgrounds. Physical activity levels were assessed using Metabolic Equivalent Task scores, and mental well-being was evaluated using standardized psychological scales. Statistical analyses were conducted to identify the significant correlations between exercise habits and mental health outcomes. Results: The findings indicate a positive association between higher physical activity levels and improved mental well-being. Participants engaging in moderate to vigorous exercise reported lower stress and anxiety levels, as well as increased life satisfaction, compared to those with sedentary lifestyles. Conclusion: Regular physical activity plays a crucial role in enhancing mental well-being. These results support the promotion of exercise as a nonpharmacological intervention for improving psychological health.
