Electric-Line-Conveyed Smart Shifting Tools Provide Efficient, Effective, and Sustainable Solution to Enhance Well Productivity

Abstract Surveillance tools, such as advanced logging systems, monitoring technologies, and real-time data analytics, offer invaluable insights into reservoir behavior, enabling operators to pinpoint areas of high-water influx and detect early signs of water breakthrough. By integrating these surveillance technologies with effective water shut-off methods, operators can selectively isolate water-producing zones while maintaining or even increasing oil flow from productive intervals. This paper introduces a revolutionary wireline tool that combines both logging and mechanical water shut-off capabilities. This advanced tool is designed for deployment in a wide range of completions to enhance oil production and effectively reduce or completely shut off water production. The tool is equipped with thru-wiring, enabling production logging services, such as Multi-Array Production Logging Tools (MPLT), Conventional Production Logging Tools (PLT), and Pulsed Neutron Logging (PNL) to be run beneath the mechanical intervention system. This system can shift and operate completion components, including sliding sleeves, formation isolation valves, and inflow control devises (ICD). This novel technique is adaptable to both vertical and horizontal wells, conveyed via slim-hole openhole or cased hole tractors, enabling navigation in challenging horizontal completions and extended-reach wells with significantly reduced risk and operational time. The electric-line-conveyed powered intervention techniques enabled operation to be done with lower cost and time, lesser footprint, and substantially reduced CO2 emission compared to coiled tubing. The technology is a key enabler to meet sustainability goals due to higher efficiency and a much lower carbon footprint in comparison with other available intervention techniques. The paper presents field experiences from horizontal oil producers with varied well geometries, where this revolutionary tool successfully deployed for water inflow diagnosis and ICDs shifting to reduce water cut and enhance well performance, at low operating cost. The tool eliminated the need for multiple, separate operations, often performed by different providers, which can increase risk, complicate accountability, and introduce challenges in diagnosing and resolving failures. The paper will also include the benefits of having a single, integrated solution for diagnostic assessments, shifting operations, and targeted water shut-off, ensuring a more streamlined, effective approach to reservoir surveillance and reservoir management.
