Transforming Methane Emissions into Opportunity: F2X Mobile Liquefaction for Sustainability in Oil & Gas
Abstract Flaring of stranded gas releases significant volumes of methane and CO₂, posing a major environmental and operational challenge for the oil and gas industry. This paper presents a detailed analysis of F2X, a fully integrated, mobile, and self-powered flare gas treatment and liquefaction system. Designed to directly convert stranded gas into low-carbon liquefied natural gas (LNG) at or near the wellsite, F2X eliminates the need for upstream compression and fixed infrastructure, providing a scalable and rapidly deployable solution. The F2X system combines gas separation, treatment, and liquefaction in a modular trailer-based configuration optimized for remote and off-grid operations. In a South Texas pilot, the platform demonstrated processing of up to 1 MMSCFD of low-pressure associated gas and consistently produce 12–15 metric tons of LNG per day. The system required no flaring or venting throughout the operational cycle. Tail gas was used to power the system, further lowering its carbon footprint. Lifecycle analysis confirmed potential annual emissions avoidance of up to 20,000 tCO2e per unit when displacing Diesel by the low-carbon produced LNG. In addition to technical performance, this paper illustrates the commercial implications of F2X deployment across multiple use cases. Results indicate a strong case for diesel displacement, flare quota compliance, and ESG reporting alignment. As global regulations evolve, the F2X platform provides a replicable, cost-effective, and verifiable path to decarbonization and flare gas valorization.
