Is sustainable development a paradox? Bamboo housing and sustainable development: stories from Pakistan

This essay examines the paradoxes of sustainable development through a case study of bamboo housing in rural Sindh, Pakistan, following the June 2022 flash floods. Drawing on field observations, digital interviews, and virtual ethnographic accounts, it focuses on the work of architect Yasmeen Lari and the Heritage Foundation of Pakistan, which promotes zero-carbon, self-built shelters using bio-based materials such as bamboo, earth, and lime. While these structures offer environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive solutions by training local communities in their construction, the study explores how local perceptions and cultural imaginaries—particularly the association of bamboo housing with kacha maqaan (temporary or inadequate dwellings)—complicate their acceptance and implementation. By analysing the social and cultural meanings attached to bamboo housing among residents, the essay highlights the contradictions in sustainable development—how it simultaneously empowers and marginalizes, includes and excludes—revealing the tensions between global sustainability narratives and local lived experiences. As scholars note, “the concept sustains while demanding change, calls for inclusion while excluding” (Yamada in Sustainability 14:13, 2022), a critique I will continue to develop here. This case study provides a concrete example to bridge theory and practice by analysing how sustainable development concepts are operationalized on the ground. However, given the limited scope of this dataset, definitive claims about local attitudes remain tentative, necessitating further in-depth research.
