Enhancing Efficiency, Safety, and Resilience: Advanced Lightning Protection Strategies for the Oil & Gas Industry
Abstract Lightning-induced fires and operational disruptions remain major risks in oil and gas operations, particularly at storage tanks, terminals, and saltwater disposal sites. This paper presents a validated lightning protection methodology—adapted from aerospace practices—for infrastructure operating in flammable environments. The approach integrates Monte Carlo-based modeling, rolling sphere analysis, and electric field control to mitigate risks often overlooked in conventional designs. Through a risk taxonomy and scenario-based analysis, four classes of lightning threats are evaluated. Special focus is given to fiberglass tanks with metallic components, which often contain ignitable vapors and conductive pathways for lightning-induced discharges. The paper contrasts ineffective technologies— such as dissipation arrays—with properly engineered catenary wire systems designed to reduce ignition probability through shielding, bonding, and surge mitigation. Empirical data from space and petrochemical sectors demonstrate dramatic reductions in ignition rates, supporting a high return on investment. By emphasizing risk-based, field-validated engineering over prescriptive compliance, this work offers a scalable strategy to improve lightning resilience and reduce ignition risks in hazardous environments.
