Optimizing <scp>ASA</scp> ‐Based Wood Composites via Polyolefin Elastomer Integration and Masterbatch Processing
ABSTRACT Growing concerns over climate change drive the use of waste resources such as wood flour in sustainable composites. However, incorporating wood flour into Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate (ASA) resin often reduces toughness due to weak interfacial adhesion. This study aimed to enhance the mechanical performance of wood flour/ASA composites by adding polyolefin elastomers (POEs) and applying a masterbatch (MB) process. The composites were prepared by two‐step extrusion, and tensile and Izod impact tests were conducted. The optimized formulation, using maleic anhydride‐grafted ethylene‐butyl acrylate (EBA‐g‐MA) with MB processing, increased impact strength by 50.5% (86.45 J/m) and elongation at break by 243.6% (13.71%) compared with the unmodified wood flour/ASA composite, while maintaining tensile strength. These results confirm that compatibilizer selection combined with MB processing provides an effective route to balance toughness, impact resistance, and strength. This approach offers practical guidance for developing durable and sustainable ASA‐based wood composites for automotive and outdoor applications.
