A Lightweight Zabbix-Based Monitoring and Management System Using Raspberry Pi for Hybrid Networks

This paper presents a resource-efficient network monitoring system built on Zabbix and deployed on a Raspberry Pi to supervise virtual devices within a PNETLab environment. The system supports real-time data collection using standard protocols such as SNMP and ICMP and enables secure remote management through SSH via Paramiko. Designed for low-cost and small-scale deployments, the solution is particularly suited for academic and training networks. Performance evaluation across up to 10 devices showed average SNMP polling latency of 2.5ms and CPU usage remaining below 15%, confirming the system’s ability to operate with minimal overhead. Even under a stress-tested polling frequency of 2 seconds, the Raspberry Pi-based server maintained stable and responsive operation. These results demonstrate the feasibility of deploying a reliable, scalable monitoring solution on constrained hardware without compromising visibility or control.
