Overmoded X-Band Magnetically Insulated Line Oscillator
We demonstrate that, in simulation, an overmoded magnetically insulated line oscillator (MILO) may alleviate challenges posed by size and breakdown constraints in MILOs, particularly those designed for high-frequency (>8 GHz) operation. MILOs that operate in the fundamental mode will suffer from strict synchronous and insulation conditions, restricting the viable size of the device. The overmoded X-band MILO (OXMILO) addresses these restrictions by intentionally operating at 9.5 GHz in a higher order mode (HEM21), producing 12.5 MW for an input current of 10.2 kA and input voltage of 300 kV.
