Gas Valorization into Ethylene: A Simulation-Based Case Study from Lebanon
This paper investigates the transformation of landfill gas (LFG), a potent source of environmental pollution, into ethylene, a high-demand petrochemical used in the manufacturing of plastics, solvents, and various industrial products. Rather than flaring or releasing LFG into the atmosphere, this study proposes a sustainable and economically viable valorization pathway. Multiple conversion routes from LFG to ethylene are examined and compared based on efficiency, technical feasibility, and environmental impact. The most appropriate process is selected and modeled using Aspen HYSYS V14 to design a complete process flow. A detailed environmental impact assessment is carried out to ensure the utility of the recycling operations. Furthermore, an economic evaluation is conducted to assess the profitability and long-term feasibility of the proposed approach.
