Massive MIMO in 5G: Capacity Trade-Offs between Open Loop and Closed Loop MIMO

The development of 5G networks represents a significant milestone in network communications. The utilization of Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technology is prevalent in contemporary times. MIMO technology has the potential to enhance transmission reliability and increase system capacity. The combination of Multiple-Input Multiple-Output and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) has demonstrated excellent performance. The field of telecommunications includes two key concepts: Closed-Loop (CL) MIMO and Open-Loop (OL) MIMO. This paper is intended to clarify the fundamental principles of MIMO and massive MIMO technologies and to highlight the primary differences between CL and OL MIMO. The ergodic capacity of the system is simulated using different configurations, including <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$4 \times 4,16 \times 16$</tex>, and <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$64 \times 64$</tex>, across a range of Signal-to-Noise Ratios (SNRs).
