MOS-Based Analysis of Audio Codec Performance in Simulated 5G Networks
In telecommunications, ensuring communication quality in mobile networks is a challenge. In this sense, advanced audio codecs, Enhanced Voice Service Wideband (EVS-WB), and Adaptive Multi-Rate Wideband (AMR-WB) are employed to improve call quality. Simulation scenarios designed in 5G mobile networks were performed to evaluate the codecs. The main objective is to calculate the Mean Opinion Score (MOS), varying factors such as bit rate combinations, UE-BS separation distances, and different numbers of handovers at different speeds - ranging from 5 km/h to 200 km/h. The results showed that both codecs demonstrate comparable MOS values at lower speeds, indicating similar audio performance. However, at moderate speeds (40-80 km/h), EVS-WB consistently outperforms AMR-WB; at the highest speed of 200 km/h, both audio codecs suffer significant MOS degradation when the UE-BS separation is large, and handovers are duplicated. This comprehensive scenario provides valuable insights for optimizing audio performance in 5G mobile networks, highlighting the relevance of understanding how audio codecs perform under various conditions.
