Review on Reactive Rejuvenators: Classification, Mechanism, Impact, Challenges, and Opportunities

This paper systematically reviews advancements in reactive rejuvenators, covering classification, mechanisms, microstructural characteristics, and macroscopic properties, while pinpointing key priorities for future research. Composed of light oil, reactive compounds, and catalysts, reactive rejuvenators function through light oil’s physical regulation of component equilibrium in aged styrene–butadiene- styrene (SBS) modified asphalt (ASMA) and reactive compounds’ chemical reconstruction of cross-linked networks. Based on the structural characteristics and mechanisms of action, reactive rejuvenators can be classified into epoxy-based systems, isocyanate-based systems, polymeric systems, monolinked systems, and composite systems. Reactive compounds comprise active functional groups (AFGs) and inert functional groups (IFGs). The AFGs reconstruct the cross-linked network structure of SBS, thereby significantly enhancing the elastic recovery efficiency of ASMA. Based on their physical regulation effects, IFGs are classified into flexible structures and rigid structures, respectively targeting the enhancement of ASMA’s properties. Currently, research on reactive rejuvenators remains preliminary, facing challenges such as nonunified action mechanisms, significant variations in effects on asphalt’s macro- and microscale properties, and limited practical applications. This review will summarize the current development of reactive rejuvenators and propose future research directions.
