A qualitative study of the motivations and strategies of indirect political expression among Chinese college students on digital platforms
Chinese college students navigate censorship and algorithmic constraints on digital platforms through indirect strategies such as metaphors, banter, and vague language. Based on interviews with 11 students, this study examines their motivations, cognition, and tactics. Findings show they balance risk avoidance with identity, community, and emotional needs, using pre-assessment and symbolic strategies. Overall, youth engage in playful, creative, and strategic expression, revealing new forms of political participation in Chinas digital era.
