Timber construction development in Kosovo: A social network analysis of influencing factors

Abstract This study investigates the development of timber construction in Kosovo from the perspective of the influencing factors and stakeholders involved. Social Network Analysis is used to explore the relationships among influencing factors within the network and to identify the critical factors. Eight stakeholders and twenty-two stakeholder-related influencing factors were identified based on a literature review and an online survey of professionals involved in the market. Subsequently, a focus group interview was conducted with selected professionals to determine the relationships among the influencing factors, which were then analyzed and visualized into a factor graph using social network analysis and visualization software, SocNetV. The critical influencing factors in timber construction development are found to be: investment predisposition, commercial viability, inclination toward timber, knowledge and experience with timber technology, and strategies and subsidies. Based on the findings, recommendations are provided to enhance stakeholders' roles in timber construction development. Beyond mapping existing dynamics, this analysis provides strategic insights and actionable recommendations for enhancing stakeholder coordination and guiding policy interventions. The results indicate that social network analysis is an effective method for identifying and evaluating critical actors and interrelationships in timber construction development in Kosovo.
