A Holistic Performance Review of Digital Intelligent Artificial Lift (DIAL): Revolutionizing Offshore Gas Lift Systems Through Insights, Best Practice, and Lessons Learnt from Past Installations in Malaysia's Oil Fields
Abstract Since 2018, Digital Intelligent Artificial Lift (DIAL) technology has undergone continuous evolution, advancing artificial lift capabilities through interventionless operation, real-time data acquisition, and remote optimisation to further enhances reservoir management and maximizing reservoir value. As a disruptive solution in single and dual-string applications across Malaysian oilfields, DIAL integrates advanced automation for seamless gas lift control. This paper reviews the deployment of DIAL across nine (9) strings /seven (7) wells in, focusing on its success criteria, field performance, lessons learnt, and implications for future replication. The implementation strategy included the selection of pilot wells across various offshore fields, leveraging autonomous control to minimize intervention risk and production deferment. Comparative analyses between DIAL and conventional gas lift methods highlighted benefits in operational efficiency, OPEX savings, and lifecycle performance, despite higher initial CAPEX. Notably, DIAL-enabled wells achieved uninterrupted production during optimization, avoiding the downtime and intervention requirements of conventional tools. Challenges encountered, such as hardware or communication failures, were systematically addressed through engineering design, streamline offshore installation procedures with real time monitoring, and enhance equipment performance. The technology also proved especially effective in high-angle wells where intervention is often impractical. These results highlight DIAL's potential as a transformative solution for the industry, advancing innovation while aligning with sustainability and efficiency goals. Despite mixed success in DIAL applications, the lessons learnt have been comprehensively documented, mitigated, reinforcing confidence that DIAL is one of the drivers for future of Remote Autonomous Operations (RAO) in Malaysia's oil fields. Showcasing DIAL as a paradigm shift in gas lift technology, offering unprecedented levels automation efficiency and alignment with digital transformation goals. Delving into its key successes, pivotal lessons learnt, and an in-depth assessment of its success criteria, performances, offering valuable insights for future implementations and optimizations from the point of view of Malaysia Petroleum Management (MPM) for industry peers’ reference.
