Optimizing Non-Associated Gas Utilization and Sustainability at the SA Structure: Innovative Approaches to Energy, Cost Optimization, and Environmental Responsibility by Holistic Idle Well Reactivation Method

Abstract SA Structure has been playing a pivotal role in northern area of East Kalimantan, and producing oil as the foremost financial backbone. Nonetheless, SA Structure also gravitates towards cleaner energy by starting energy efficiency by utilizing non-associated gas particularly from idle wells. This move has massively converted gas flare into utilized gas and reducing exceeding electricity usage from PLN with the equal amount of $40,412 cost optimization monthly. A series of shifting paradigms and methods are seized in this movement including well integrity data gathering on idle wells, reinterpretation on potential of idle wells using MIFI (Mahakam Integrated Fluid Interpretation), and in-house ranking and screening method for locating best gas potential wells. All processes are holistically done with the segmented functions covering Well Intervention, Subsurface Development, Well Operations, as well as Field Operations. This action also converts oil producing line to gas line, therefore increasing acumen from economical lense due to zero tangible investment. Over the past 2 years, we have successfully maximized the production of non-associated gas to 0.9 MMSCFD on average, ensuring a reliable and consistent output. This achievement has contributed to significant cost optimization, with electricity efficiency improvements resulting in savings of 1.05 million USD. Additionally, our commitment to asset security has been reinforced through proactive monitoring and maintenance measures. Notably, we have achieved a major environmental milestone by eliminating gas flaring at the SA Structure, furthering our sustainability objectives while maintaining regulatory compliance. These efforts demonstrate our ability to deliver both operational excellence and environmental responsibility. This study introduces the MIFI Petrophysics reinterpretation method, a novel approach used to accurately locate gas potential in idle wells, significantly enhancing exploitation efficiency. Through this method, non-associated gas previously untapped at the SA Structure has been successfully utilized, marking a key step toward optimizing gas resources. Looking ahead, the gas from this structure will be further developed for portable LNG facilities, offering a promising solution for flexible, sustainable energy production. These innovative techniques not only maximize resource utilization but also lay the groundwork for future advancements in gas development and processing.
