A Novel and Economical Combination of (Micromax /Ilmenite) for High Pressure and High Temperature Oil-Well Cement Applications

Abstract Well integrity is heavily dependent on the effectiveness of the cementing process, which becomes particularly challenging in deep reservoirs subjected to high pressures and temperatures (HPHT), where a significant portion of untapped hydrocarbons remains. In such environments, using high-density cement is critical to maintain wellbore stability. To achieve this, weighting agents like ilmenite and Micromax are often utilized. Ilmenite contributes positively to cement performance but tends to cause particle settling, a risk that can have severe implications and disaster. On the other hand, Micromax avoids sedimentation problems but is more expensive. This study aims to develop a balanced solution by combining both materials to meet the needs of HPHT cementing. The research involved evaluating the effects of blending ilmenite and Micromax on various cement properties, including viscosity, tensile capacity, elastic modulus, permeability, and stability against sedimentation. Material characterization was conducted through particle size analysis and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) testing. Findings indicated that the combined use of ilmenite and Micromax led to marked improvements in cement slurry pumpability, reducing viscosity by 27% compared to a formulation with only ilmenite. Additionally, tensile strength improved by 21%, and permeability was lowered by 13%. Other parameters, such as Young’s modulus and the degree of sedimentation, remained stable and within acceptable operational limits. This research introduces a novel and cost-efficient strategy for HPHT oil-well cement design through the dual use of ilmenite and Micromax. This combined approach presents a viable alternative to using either material alone, offering both economic and performance benefits for high-demand cementing scenarios.
