Reducing Operational Delays Through Wait-On-Cement Optimization Using NeoLite: A New Engineered Optimized Lightweight Cement Technology for Low Fracture Gradient and Depleted Zones, Mahakam Field, Offshore Area, Indonesia

Abstract Cementing operations are critical to ensure well integrity and zonal isolation in offshore drilling, particularly in fields characterized by low fracture gradients and depleted zones. The Mahakam field in Indonesia presents unique challenges due to narrow pressure windows between pore and fracture pressures, increasing the risk of loss circulation during cement placement. Lightweight cement systems are typically required to minimize hydrostatic pressure; however, conventional designs often result in prolonged Wait-On-Cement (WOC) times. These delays lead to increased non-productive time (NPT), higher project costs, and inefficient rig utilization. This paper introduces NeoLite, a new engineered optimized lightweight cement system designed to reduce WOC time without compromising compressive strength or cement integrity. The system integrates a novel additive, Enhancer 923, to accelerate strength development and improve early set performance. Field trials on surface casing cement jobs in wells BE-4 and BE-7 demonstrated a reduction of WOC time by up to 7 hours. At 24 hours, compressive strength exceeded 6,800 kPa (992 psi), with 48-hour values reaching over 13,800 kPa (2,006 psi). The system maintained API fluid loss control and achieved consistent zonal isolation verified by cement bond logs. No casing pressure anomalies were observed after three months. Cost analysis revealed net savings of over USD 62,000 per well, affirming the system's economic and operational value.
