Success Story: First ESP Y-Tool Installation in 7-Inch Casing for Selective Production in Medco's Onshore Block

Abstract The TJ-X1 well, equipped with a 7-inch production casing, is being developed to assess the hydrocarbon potential of the Talang Akar formation, while the proven Baturaja formation, which has a steady production rate when operated individually, remains undisturbed to continue its production. Producing from multiple formations in a single well can be challenging due to the differing characteristics of each reservoir. While one formation needs to be produced, others must be isolated without compromising their proven productivity. Given the depletion of the Baturaja formation and limited gas availability, ESP was selected as the optimal artificial lift method for continued production. The ESP Y-Tool is particularly well-suited for this type of well due to its ability to easily open or close formations for selective or commingled production in the future. It only requires a slickline for operation, eliminating the need for a rig job. The completion string is divided into two sections—upper and lower—equipped with an On/Off Tool, two hydraulic packers, an SSD, an XN Nipple, and perforated tubing for production. The installation of the ESP Y-Tool required a safe and smooth operation due to tight clearance. This paper presents the first ESP Y-Tool installation in Indonesia onshore block with a 7-inch casing, utilizing the On/Off Tool to connect the upper and lower strings. It describes the challenges encountered during the operation, the solutions implemented, and how this new method enables production from multiple formations with different characteristics. Notably, it significantly reduces costs by eliminating the need for rig entry, typically required in conventional methods, leading to a 99% cost reduction. This success not only facilitates cost-effective production from the Talang Akar formation but also offers valuable lessons for future complex well installations.
