Advancing Cardiovascular Sciences in Ageing for Cardiovascular Longevity Through Transformation and Implementation
Population ageing and the rise in age-related cardiovascular disease are major sources of healthcare, societal and economic stress worldwide. Cardiovascular disease often coincides with declines in other organ systems, resulting in functional dependence, cognitive impairment, sarcopenia, and frailty. Despite substantial gerontology and cardiovascular research advancements, further efforts are needed in clinical care, translation, education, and health policy. To effectively address the growing challenges of ageing and cardiovascular disease in the authors’ region, centralised institutions focused on discovering, translating and implementing scientifically backed strategies are urgently needed. We envision that the transformation of cardiovascular care of older adults should encompass the full spectrum of primary prevention at the population health level to secondary prevention and the maintenance of healthy longevity. This notion could take the form of a cardiovascular ageing and longevity initiative, the first of its kind within the Asia-Pacific cardiology community, that will transform the landscape of geriatric cardiology through translating discoveries in cardiovascular geroscience and advancing gerontechnology innovations for real-world applications.
