From Margins to Movement: The Role of Special Olympics Ontario in Promoting Inclusive Sport for Children with Developmental Disabilities

Sport and physical activity are essential for all children, including those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). This study reviews the content of policy documents and public materials from Special Olympics Ontario to examine how programs like Active Start, FUNdamentals, MultiSport, Unified Champion Schools, and School-Based Sports Festivals support inclusive, developmentally appropriate sport opportunities. This review highlights Special Olympics Ontario’s leadership in promoting physical literacy, social inclusion, and youth leadership. While strong inclusive values guide these initiatives, further research is needed to support equitable sport systems across diverse regions.
